The Answer Now Loads Before the Results Do

Google is expanding some AI Overviews before searchers scroll, pushing standard results lower and changing where local customers make decisions.

The Answer Now Loads Before the Results Do

Google has confirmed that AI Overviews are being dynamically expanded to full length on some queries. Instead of a short summary with a "Show more" button, the complete AI answer loads immediately, with the AI Mode "Ask anything" box already open. The standard search results are pushed well below it.

Google's statement is direct: AI Overviews may expand for topics where its systems determine it is most useful. If a searcher has already begun scrolling, the expansion stops so they do not lose their place.

This is a layout change on the surface. Underneath, it is a change in where customers make decisions.

Why It Matters to Local Businesses

Most local businesses have never depended on ranking first for an informational query. They depend on being found in the map pack, on the profile, in reviews, and in the directory listings that feed all three.

That does not make this irrelevant. It makes it structural.

When an AI answer fills the screen, the customer reads a summary that Google assembled about a category of business, such as plumbers, dentists, roofers, and restaurants, before they ever scroll to a list of names. The businesses named in that answer are the ones Google can describe confidently. Everything else is below the fold.

The click data supports the concern. Zero-click searches have climbed to roughly 65% overall and 77% on mobile. When an AI Overview appears, an estimated 83% of those queries end without a click to any website. Demand has not fallen. The delivery point has moved.

How It Works

An AI answer is assembled from sources the system can verify. For a local business, those sources are specific and mostly under your control.

Your Google Business Profile

Categories, services, hours, service area, attributes, and description. This is the primary structured record Google holds about the business.

Your reviews

Volume, recency, and content. Reviews are the largest body of independent language describing what a business actually does and how well it does it. AI answers lean on them because they are hard to fabricate at scale.

Your directory listings

Consistency across the wider web is how a system confirms that a business is real, operating, and located where it claims. Conflicting addresses, old phone numbers, and dead listings introduce doubt.

Your website

Still necessary, but its role has shifted. It is less a destination and more a source document, a place where services, service areas, pricing structure, and contact paths are stated plainly enough for a machine to read without inference.

When these four agree, a business is easy to describe. When they disagree, it is easier for the system to describe a competitor instead.

The second half is capture. If the answer surface is where the decision happens, the paths out of that surface have to work. A phone number that connects. A booking link that loads on mobile. Messaging that gets a response. A profile that is complete enough to close without a website visit.

The Takeaway

The direction of travel has been clear for two years, and this change moves it further along: customers increasingly choose a business before they ever visit its website.

The response is not to chase the format. It is to make the business easy for both machines and people to understand. Accurate facts in every place they are published. A steady flow of recent reviews. Listings that agree with each other. Clear paths to call, book, or message from wherever the customer happens to be standing.

Visibility, trust, and capture were always the job. What has changed is that they now have to work without the click.
